Decorative gable vents are essential to quality attic ventilation and help you cool down the whole house while preventing roof damage problems throughout the year.

How does attic ventilation work?

Ventilating the attic is essential because a sealed attic will trap heat and moisture, which reduces the lifespan of roof shingles. It also adds to the cost of cooling the house in summers when the trapped heat and moisture seep into the house.

Proper attic ventilation for homes works on the heated air principle rising naturally over the fresh air from intake vents. Intake vents are located at the lowest portion of the roof and allow cool air to enter the attic. Hot air vents or exhaust vents are located on top of the roof and expel the hot air present inside the attic.

Types of gable vents for attic:

Intake vents

Most vents in the attic are soffit vents and placed either as individually spaced vents or as a continuous line running across the eave’s whole length. Some gable roofs also have intake vents in the form of gable venting for homes of varying sizes. These can function as multipurpose vents, letting the hot air dissipate out, and when the wind is perpendicular to the roof, cold air blows in.

Exhaust vents

While gable vents are effective multipurpose vents, here are a few more types of exhaust vents that can be used to release the trapped heat from an attic.

  • ridge vents: Ridge vents run across the ridge’s whole length on roofs and are famous for their subtle ventilation that does not disrupt the roof’s aesthetics.
  • Static vents: Easily recognizable due to their characteristic protrusion from the roofline, static vents are covered to keep elements like rain, hail, and snow at bay. Static vents are ideally located near the ridges. They are available in an array of colours and shapes to match the roof shingles and complement the aesthetic appeal of your roof.
  • rafter venting: In some cases, the attic area is converted into an additional room, and in these cases, open wall gable ventilation is not possible. Rafter vents can efficiently manage air flow in these situations.

Gable vents for air circulation are an essential part of any home and play an integral role in keeping the air fresh and regulating the temperature inside our homes and keeping electricity bills at a minimum.

Decorative gable vents in Canada also elevate the aesthetic appeal of homes.
